MPL: A 'One-Stop' Medical Contract Manufacturer
BY JOANNA MILLER
Contract and private-label manufacturer Medical Products Laboratories (MPL) says it is there for its customers, whether they are interested in private labeling one of their OEM formulas or need a brand-new formula developed.
Managing Director Scot Stone says the company serves many customers in the pharmaceutical industry and also works with cosmetic, dental, medical device, nutraceutical, dietary supplements and pet-care grooming-aid clients, as well.
The company specializes in small- to medium-size production batches from 10,000 to 10 million
units which sets it apart from competitors. "Most contract manufacturers couldn't even take an order that small," Stone says.
MPL has many different types of semi- to fully automatic equipment that can fit a customer's needs and budget. The company also has extensive filling capabilities, he notes. "We're a one-stop shop - we can fill any viscosity of liquids, tablets, creams, lotions, gels, foams, powders, pastes and ointments," he explains.
He says Medical Products prides itself on quality. MPL is PDA registered, cGMP compliant and ISO 9001:2000 and 13485:2003 CMDCAS certified. All R&D, manufacturing and packaging operations are housed in one location for maximum quality and efficiency. The company says its facility and equipment are the highest caliber and its full-time staff is dedicated to fulfilling requirements to complete satisfaction.
To keep employees knowledgeable about various quality standards, the company requires many training courses. Training covers ISO, cGMPs, PDA regulations and microbiological operations. "We keep strict standards on cleanliness by having validated methods," Stone says. "All employees are trained in these procedures, as well. Sometimes, we have to handle very hazardous materials. Everyone receives mandatory safety training on how to handle each material."
The company's 185 employees include "everyone from a master's degree in pharmaceutical chemistry down to the production workers on the lines," Stone says. "Our chemists even have
the abilities to reverse-engineer formulas. If a customer brings us a product that's already on the market, we're able to replicate it for them. Let our in-house research and development chemists turn your dream into reality from laboratory concept through scale-up, process development and production. That's part of what makes us unique in the industry.
"With almost 80 years of pharmaceutical experience, MPL can transform [clients'] challenges into affordable solutions," he continues. "By continually providing high-quality products and outstanding customer service, MPL enables its customers to do what they do best ... and by delegating the manufacturing and packaging responsibilities to MPL ... enables us to do what we do best. We build strong relationships with our partners by constantly improving existing products, developing new products and supporting our partner's needs to grow their sales."
Stone's grandfather, Harold G. Stone, founded the company in Philadelphia in 1928. It has been in the same facility for the last 32 years. For many years, Harold Stone worked to develop a nationwide school-based fluoride mouthrinse program. "We are now the largest manufacturer of school-based fluoride mouthrinses in the United States and the pioneers of cavities-preventive programs for school systems, clinics and government agencies," Scot Stone says. "Our cavities-prevention programs are being utilized throughout the entire United States in addition to our international programs. While in the past, our primary focus has been in the development of our branded of line of products engineered for public health dentistry, our contract services division continues to expand due to our extensive machinery, experience and manufacturing capabilities."
Stone says the company has grown approximately 20 percent per year for the last five years, and he expects that to continue.
Dun and Bradstreet reported the company had $48 million in sales in 2005. "We're acquiring many new contract manufacturing customers all over the world," he says. "In general, people are dissatisfied and are seeking new manufacturers. They're finding our quality and pricing to be extremely competitive. It's not only people developing new products, it's people unhappy with their current manufacturers who demand better pricing, higher quality and on-time delivery."
Medical Products Laboratories' mission is continuing growth through R&D, manufacturing and distribution of quality, competitively priced, innovative products to reputable customers.
"Flexibility, persistence and innovation define us, customer service drives us and our employees make it happen," Stone says.
